We walked from the Education center to the marsh on wooden sidewalks.  We got a key to visit Salty the Salt Marsh mouse’s home.  When we walked out on the mud we could see scat and animal tracks.  We didn’t see Salty but we know he lives out here and eats pickleweed.

We saw pickleweed and Alkali Heath in the salt marsh.  Pickleweed is a small plant with thick stems.  The plant tastes salty and it sends salt to the end of the branches and the branches turn red.  We looked for salt crystals on the leaves of the Alkali Heath.

The plants with the round yellow flowers are called Brass Buttons.  We think they gave it this name because the flowers look like buttons.
